Newspaper clipping from the Tulsa Daily World published June 15, 1921 and entitled "Negro Exodus Is Denied By Roads; Data Shows Comparatively Few Have Left City in Last Two Weeks." This article refutes the unsubstantiated rumors that African Americans are leaving Tulsa "'by the thousands'" following the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. The report cites the ticket office of the Saint Louis & San Francisco "Frisco" Railway as issuing 150 tickets through the American Red Cross for African Americans leaving Tulsa. More than fifty have purchased their own tickets. The destinations included Kansas City, Oklahoma City, and Saint Louis. The article also states that "no accurate check has been kept of refugees who left the city by automobile or who departed with relatives or friends." The article contains a contradictory claim and states, "Negroes who remained here have stated that not less than 5,000 members of their race have moved from Tulsa. . . ." |
