Newspaper clipping from the Tulsa Daily World published July 8, 1921 and entitled "Negroes On Lansing Avenue Selected by Reconstruction Committee as Center of New Little Africa." This article reports upon the decision of the Reconstruction Committee to authorize Lansing Avenue as the main thoroughfare of the reconstructed African American community in Tulsa following the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. The article announces that Charles Page will extend electric lighting into the newly created district, and the City of Tulsa will make the necessary improvements of water, sewers, and paved streets. The members of the Reconstruction Committee chose the area on Lansing Avenue because of its higher elevation, thus increasing sanitary conditions. The article reports that Wyatt Tate Brady announced that fifteen to twenty homes are currently under construction in the new district north of Pine Street. One of the homes is that of Dr. J. M. Keys, costing $10,000. |
