Newspaper clipping from the editorial section of the Tulsa Tribune on June 8, 1921, and entitled "Get A Green Card." The editorial supports the implementation of the green card system by the Tulsa Police Department following the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. The system required every African American on city streets to carry a green identification card or face arrest. The editor states, "The city does just what it should do when it gets rid of the negro who cannot give a good account of both his time and conduct. The green card does something more than to help the city get rid of the bad negro. It is the certificate of industry and decency to every negro who carries it." The order for African Americans to carry green cards went into effect June 8, 1921 and the order remained until July 7, 1921. |
