Newspaper clipping from the Tulsa Daily World published July 20, 1921 and entitled "Chief And Officers Take Witness Stand; Says Every Precaution Was Taken to Disarm Rioting Negroes; Blaine Coroborates [sic]; Temporary Police Head Says Whites Would Have Been Massacred; Call 100 Witnesses; All Police Officers Will Be Called to Refute State Charges." This article reports upon the testimony given in court on June 19, 1921 in the case against suspended Tulsa Police Chief John A. Gustafson. Gustafson was the first witness to testify, followed by George H. Blaine, the acting chief. Both men stated that it would have been impossible to disarm the group of African Americans that congregated at the courthouse on the evening of May 31, 1921. The article contains a summary of Gustafson and Blaine's testimony regarding the confrontation at the courthouse, urging African Americans to return to their homes, and attempts to prevent Caucasians from breaking into stores to confiscate arms and ammunition. The article also contains testimony from C. M. Anderson, who assisted National Guard troops with searching houses in the African American community and transporting detainees to Convention Hall. Anderson denied that he saw any burning or looting while he was in that section of the city. The report states that witness J. W. Patton did not hear Gustafson at any time give orders to kill African Americans or burn their property. The clipping also contains a column which lists all of the charges against former Police Chief John A. Gustafson, policemen Bay Ward and Roy Meacham, and Sand Springs Police Chief B. L. Waddell. The column also states the actions taken on each charge. |
