Dairy on 244 pages of loose-leaf notebook paper written by Lilah Denton Lindsay of Tulsa, OK, from April 14, 1936 to December 29, 1938. The entry for Friday, July 16, 1937 reads, "A little warmer today--84. No news of Amelia Earhart. A sad loss at sea." The entry for the next day reads, "Saturday, July 17th. Took it easy in forenoon for I have had a touch of malaria, not very well. About 3 o'clock, Sarah Perryman phoned to ask me if I would spend the night with her. She was alone and for some reason felt nervous and wanted company. I told her I would, to come for me about 5 o'clock pm. She did and she had pork chops for the evening meal. I knew I should not eat them but they looked so tempting and tasted so good. I ate one, and paid dearly. I suffered the latter part of the night and most all day Sunday with stomach trouble. One o'clock Sunday morning a messenger brought the report her husband George had gotten hurt at 1st & Main and was dead at the Sisler Hospital. Well of course, we did not sleep any more." The entry for October 1, 1937 reads, "Hurrah! My dear old lovely fall month of October--my birth month. Should I continue to kick around here and see the 21st day I shall be happy. Had I been selecting a month for my birth I could not have selected a better one. I love October the month when all nature is aglow with even more colors than the rainbow. I would love to spend weeks and weeks in the woods in Oct. and commune with Nature, God's canopy, and God. My election to the Hall of Fame was announced. . . |
