Black & white picture postcard measuring 5.5" x 3.5" and depicting the 6th Annual Roundup held at Dewey, OK on July 4, 1913. The image shows the crowd of spectators in the covered grandstand. A printed caption on the postcard states, "'Something doing' in the Arena 6th Annual Roundup, Dewey, Okla. July 4, 1913." Jake Bartles organized the first Annual Roundup in Dewey, OK in 1908. It grew into one of the largest roping and riding contests with daredevil performers. The 1913 Roundup drew a crowd estimated at 22,000. Glenn Condon of Tulsa, OK reported upon the event for the Tulsa World newspaper, and his wife, Eula Youngblood Condon, opened the event by riding a white, Kentucky, thoroughbred horse named Fairyland owned by Joe A. Bartles. |
