Tulsa Public Schools School Calendar 1999-2000. Each month has an image of a school with the history of that school. Photographs Include: Third Ward School - The former site of Lindsey and Riverview Elementary schools at the 12th and Guthrie intersection. Riverview was built around Lindsey before the site was demolished. Washington School - Located at First Street and Rockford Avenue, the former Lynch Forsythe School. In September 1947, 69 citizens signed a petition to have the building declared a nuisance. Lincoln School - Located at 15th and Peoria, the former Belleview School. Renovated in early 1990's as part of Cherry Street. Now houses Chimi's Restaurant. Daniel Webster High School - Constructed on 19 acres of the former Clinton Ranch by the Works Project Administration. First occupied by students in the school year 1938-39. There is some disagreement about who was officially the first graduating class of Webster. Although the first students to attend classes in the facility arrived in 1938-39, the Class of 1938 claimed to be the first graduating class, as their diplomas and rings carried the Webster emblem. Will Rogers High School - Constructed in 1937. Forty-five percent of the monies were furnished by the Public Works Administration. Located on 26.894 acres, the first class was warned to beware of bad cattle. Irving School - Located at the intersection of Maybelle and Admiral Boulevard. The former Owens School. West Tulsa School - Believed to be old Celia Clinton School, occupying the block between 21st Street and 21st Place and Quanah and Rosedale Avenues. Originally in a separate school district, it was later annexed by the Tulsa Public Schools. Central High School - Located within the city block of Sixth and Seventh Streets, between Detroit and Cincinnati Avenues. The site was first occupied September 17, 1917, in response to the growing student population. Later additions came in 1922 and 1924. Central is considered the "Truck of the Tulsa Public Schools Family Tree." North Side School - Opened in 1906 in the center of a residential district on Standpipe Hill, corner of Boston Avenue and Easton Street. The School's name was later changed to Sequoyah, not to be confused with the current Sequoyah Elementary School. Owens School - Owens School's name was changed at some point to Irving School. The School is still standing at the corner of Maybelle and Admiral Boulevard. It may be seen from the Crosstown Expressway Interchange. Tulsa High School - Occupied the block of ground now containing the Philtower, Atlas Life and Mid-Continent buildings. The dome top was actual gold leaf. Initially contained all grade levels. Bellview School - The land at 15th and Peoria for Bellview was deeded to the school district by Samuel Augustus Orcutt, who laid claim to part of his wife's Indian land allotment. The name was later changed to Lincoln School, now the site of Chimi's Restaurant on Cherry Street. |
