Newspaper clipping fragment from the Tulsa Daily World published July 2, 1921 and entitled "Rioter Wantonly Injured Veteran; National Guard Incensed Over Shooting of Capt. Edward Wheeler; To Investigate Case; Spanish Veteran Dangerously Wounded in Riot While Pleading for Peace." The article reports upon the shooting of Captain Edward L. Wheeler of the Oklahoma National Guard on the night of May 31, 1921, during the violence of the Tulsa Race Massacre. On that night, Wheeler encountered a group of armed Caucasian men on North Detroit Avenue who were on the lookout for African Americans. Wheeler ordered the men to disperse, but one of the men advanced forward and put a gun against Wheeler's abdomen while stating that Wheeler was trying to protect the African Americans. The man fired the gun and a bullet shot through Wheeler exiting from his right side and breaking his right arm. At the time of this article, the report states that Wheeler was still living, but confined to his room in the Jefferson Hotel. |
