Five-page memorandum written January 21, 2000 by Ed Wheeler of Tulsa Community College to Robert D. Norris, Jr., a military research consultant for the Tulsa Race Riot Commission. In this memorandum, Wheeler describes the racial environment in Tulsa in 1971, when he began research for an article on the Tulsa Race Massacre. Wheeler received warnings and threats. Wheeler also outlines some of his research findings taken from interviews of Race Massacre survivors. He states that each African American survivor he interviewed held a favorable opinion of the Oklahoma National Guard and its actions during the event. Wheeler also explains the difference between the terms "Home Guard," "Tulsa County Home Guard," and "Oklahoma National Guard." Wheeler also describes the reluctance of Tulsa editors to publish his story in 1971. |
