Color postcard measuring 3.5" x 5.375" and depicting the Hotel Tulsa, located at 119 East 3rd Street in Tulsa, OK. The reverse of the postcard is addressed to Mrs. C. J. Cummings of Fillmore, CA. The Tulsa Building Company financed the construction of the eleven-story Hotel Tulsa, located at the corner of East 3rd Street and South Cincinnati Avenue. Architect F. W. Hunt of Springfield, MO designed the hotel. Construction began in 1910 with Caldwell & Drake Construction Company serving as the building contractor. The hotel cost $500,000 to build. It opened for guests on May 9, 1912, with Robert G. Peace, a banker from the National Bank of New York City, registering as the first hotel guest. The hotel's opening corresponded with a state banking convention held in Tulsa. Guests filled all 330 hotel rooms, with some people turned away due to lack of accommodations. For decades the Hotel Tulsa hosted guests from all over the world. Many Tulsa oilmen used the hotel lounge and restaurant to broker oil deals. The hotel closed September 10, 1962 after fifty years of hosting guests. The building sat empty for the next eleven years. It was demolished on September 30, 1973 to make way for the construction of the Tulsa Performing Arts Center. |
