| Scope & Content | Newspaper clipping from the Tulsa Daily World published June 7, 1921, and entitled "All Blacks Must Wear Green Tags; Cannot Appear on Streets Without Mark Signed by Their Employer; Effective Wednesday; Warn Citizens Against Having Unemployed Negroes About Servants' Quarters." This article reports that Tulsa Police Commissioner James M. Adkison issued an order on June 6, 1921 requiring the Tulsa police to arrest any African American on the city streets after Wednesday, June 8 who does not carry a green identification tag signed by his employer. The article states, "Negroes who are not supplied with identification tags will be arrested and taken to the fairgrounds for permanent identification Wednesday morning." The article reports upon an additional order issued by the Central Welfare Committee prohibiting white employers from allowing African Americans to live in servant's quarters who are not regularly employed on the premises. Prior to the order, a number of Caucasian employers allowed additional African Americans to live on their properties. The green tag identification system remained in effect until July 7, 1921. |
