Description |
Souvenir black and white photograph, measuring 2.5" x 4" and depicting Yvonne Chouteau, Ballerina - Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. Compliments of Capezio, The Dancer's Cobbler since 1887. The original print was signed by Chouteau, thanking Capezio for making her ballet shoes. Myra Yvonne Chouteau (1929-2016) grew up in Vinita, OK, a member of the Shawnee Tribe. In 1943 she became the youngest dancer at the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, a touring ballet company, where she worked for fourteen years. She was one of the "Five Moons", Native American prima ballerinas of Oklahoma. In the 1960s, after returning to Oklahoma, she and her husband started the Oklahoma City Civic Ballet (now the Oklahoma City Ballet) and the dance department at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, OK. Salvatore Capezio was an Italian immigrant who opened a shoe repair shop near the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City in 1887. He became the official pointe shoe maker for the opera house in 1892. He continued to make dance shoes for Broadway and the New York City Ballet until his death in 1940. From 1941-present the Capezio company has continued to design and make dancewear. |
