Description |
Black & white roll film negative measuring 2.25" x 2.25" and depicting William Wayne "Bill" Keeler. He was born April 5, 1908 in Dalhart, Texas, to parents William Keeler and Sarah Louisa Carr. Raised in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, Keeler later joined Phillips Petroleum Company as an engineer and chemist and worked his way to CEO of the company by 1968. In 1971, the Cherokee people elected Keeler as the principal chief in the first Cherokee election since 1903. He served as chief from 1971 to 1975. Keeler promoted Cherokee industry and supported housing and educational programs. He also helped draft a new Cherokee constitution in 1975. He died August 24, 1987 in Bartlesville, Oklahoma at age seventy-nine. The Cherokee government headquarters in Tahlequah, known as W. W. Keeler Complex, was named in honor of Chief Keeler. |
