Postcard: Interior of Tulsa's first Schoolroom Skyscrapers at Fourth and Boston cover the site of the Presbyterian mission and school, (1884-1898). Village pupils also attended the Methodist school, Main and Brady, (1888); the Catholic school, Third and Elgin, (1898) and private classes. Tulsa incorporated, (1898), organized public schools and purchased the Presbyterian school buildings. The cradle of Tulsa's religious and cultural life was a school-room until 1905. This card is sponsored by three pioneers: Mrs. O. H. Haworth (Ida Stephens), Tulsa's first teacher; by Mrs. Lilah D. Lindsey, mission teacher, (1886) and first private teacher; also by the first teacher of the Methodist school, Matie Mowbray, who married the famous U.S. Marshal, Heck Thomas. |
