Reproduction, black & white photograph measuring 10" x 8" and depicting the 1911 Daniel Building located at 101-107 East 3rd Street in Tulsa, OK. The Simmons Building is to the right, then the Hotel Tulsa. To the left is the Hotel Alexander. The Bliss Hotel, built in 1928, is to the far left. Borden's Restaurant is visible on the corner in the Daniel Building. Multi-millionaire businessman Richard T. Daniel financed the construction of the Daniel Building which began in January 1911 as a four-story, steel-frame building at the northeast corner of the intersection of East 3rd Street and South Boston Avenue. E. G. Fike & Company served as the general contractor. Harlow Dry Goods Company secured a five-year lease and occupied all four floors when the building opened for occupancy. From December 1913 to September 1914, the building contracting firm of Van Horn & Son, comprised of Abraham Rawlings Van Horn and John William Van Horn, built additional floors, bringing the building to the height of ten stories. A water well was also drilled in the building's basement at that time, providing a private water source. The building later housed the Community National Life Insurance Company. It was demolished in 1973 to make room for Williams Green and the Tulsa Performing Arts Center. The 1911 Daniel Building should not be confused with the 1908 Daniel Building, located at 221-225 South Main Street in Tulsa, OK. |
