Description |
Black & white panoramic photograph measuring 51.25" x 13.5" and depicting the 11th Street bridge over the Arkansas River in Tulsa, OK. A trolley cable is visible in the image. A caption on the photograph reads, "Tulsa-West Tulsa Bridge Across the Arkansas River At Tulsa, Oklahoma. Length 1470 ft. Width 38 ft. Cost $200,000 Built 1915-1916. Longest reinforced concrete bridge in the Southwest." The 11th Street Bridge, completed in December 1915, replaced an earlier wooden bridge. The bridge, built in 1915 by Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron Company, cost $180,000. It consisted of an eighteen-span, concrete-arch bridge measuring 1,470 feet long and 34 feet wide. The bridge contained two vehicular lanes on either side of a rail track. Harrington, Howard & Ash served as consulting engineers. The design included a classical balustrade and Victorian-era lighting, but those details were removed in 1929 in favor of Art Deco upgrades. In 1934, the bridge was widened to 52 feet and 8 inches in width at a cost of $305,000. |
