Description |
Reproduction, black & white photograph measuring 7.5" x 7.5" and and depicting the ferry between Red Fork to Tulsa, Creek Nation, near the location of the present 11th Street bridge. This ferry was a side-wheeler with a steam engine. A chuck wagon is visible on the ferry. The photograph also shows cattle being driven up a shallow section of the river. The back of the image contains a handwritten notation stating, "Red Fork Ferry 1900." However a letter (1978.058.027) accompanying an identical image provides contradictory information and gives a full history about the "Nevins Ferry," which was located near the present Muskogee Pump Station and Port of Muskogee on the Arkansas River. The ferry was owned by Mose and Julia Nevins. He was Choctaw and she was of Creek descent. This ferry was operating as early as 1872, abandoned about 1907. A complete history is in the letter 1978.058.027. Duplicate copies of this photograph identity this scene as the ferry between Red Fork and Tulsa in 1895. |
