Description |
Black and white panoramic photograph measuring 3.375" x 19.5" and depicting an entire block of homes destroyed by fire during the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. The foreground of the photograph shows the 500 block of North Deroit Avenue with at least ten destroyed homes. One house in the middle of the photograph has enough of the front gable standing to identify the house number. It is house 529 owned by H. M. Magill. The photograph also shows the burned home of Ellis W. and Mary Woods located at 531 North Detroit Avenue. See photograph 2002.554.004 for an image of the home during the riot before it burned. Other burned homes in this panoramic photograph include the residences of M. Alice Wright, R. T. Bridgewater, A. J. Smitherman, J. J. McKeever, P. S. Thompson, Mary A. Dingey, A. C. Jackson, T. R. Gentry, and C. D. Brown. In the middle of the photograph's background, Booker T. Washington High School, containing the Maurice Willows Hospital, is visible to the east at 502 North Frankfort Avenue. To the right of the school, eight tents are visible. The tents were set up by the American Red Cross as temporary shelters. The back of this photograph contains three sections of fabric tape, indicating that this photograph was created by taking four individual snapshots and piecing them together to form a panoramic view. |
