Black & white photograph measuring 10" x 8" and depicting a view looking south on South Boston Avenue in Tulsa, OK. From left to right the following businesses are visible all on South Boston Avenue: Victory Bar, 103; Harrington's, Inc., a men's clothing store, 109; Consumers Quality Foods, 113; Reeder Hotel, 115; Reeder Restaurant, 117; T-Town Lounge, 119; and Bliss Hotel, 123 South Boston Avenue. These buildings were torn down for the construction of One Williams Center. See 2016.028.10765 for a color version of this scene. Construction on the Art Deco, ten-story Bliss Hotel began in 1928. Architect Leland I. Shumway designed the building. The hotel opened in 1929. The hotel's logo was "Sleep in Bliss in the Oil Capital of the World." The hotel contained 250 rooms, 250 bathrooms, circulating ice water, and ceiling fans in every room. Charles W. Bliss was the president and manager. In its later years, the building provided housing for low-income elderly Tulsans. The building was demolished on February 18, 1973. |
