Description |
Black & white photograph measuring 8" x 10" depicting the ruins following the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. A temporary, canvas-topped house is visible to the right of the burned out businesses. Near the middle of the photograph, an African American woman stands among the debris. The back of the photograph contains a handwritten notation stating, "Ruins of the Titus Bld. N. Greenwood. Owner Mrs. Titus, a widow. Photo by Hooker." The photographer was Reverend Jacob H. Hooker whose studio was located at 22 North Elgin Avenue. The Tulsa city directory records Mrs. M. E. Titus, widow of George Titus, living at 125 1/2 North Greenwood Avenue. She worked as a laundress. |
