The photograph was likely taken during a parade in Tulsa, OK, during the first annual Indian Convention. On June 11, 1924, Dorothy McBirney was named queen of the Indian ball that took place during the first annual Indian Convention held under the auspices of the Society of Oklahoma Indians in Tulsa, OK. On April 20, 1925, she was appointed as "Princess Tulsa" to represent the city in the second annual Indian Convention held at Ponca City, OK, on May 18-24, 1925. On May 18, she was crowned "Queen," selected from thirty, Native American, young girls. A Pathe news reel of the convention and McBirney's crowning was shown at the Murray Theatre in Ponca City. McBirney was of mixed-blood Muscogee Creek heritage, the daughter of James Hugh McBirney and Vera Mary Clinton McBirney. |
