Description |
Sepia-toned, panoramic photograph measuring 18.75" x 9.5" and depiciting an aerial view of downtown Tulsa, OK. Business signs shown include the following: Salvation Army Citadel, Sun Company, Good Bar, E.H. Jones Furniture Co., Banknote Printing Co. Tulsa World, and Mincks Hotel. An identical image in the collection contains the following inscription, "Tulsa as it looked in 1929 from to top of the First and Cheyenne building's 150-foot stack. A not-too-young Tulsa photographer, George Howard, persuaded PSC officials to let him climb the stack to get an "aerial" picture of the city. Serial photography was in its infancy then. He climbed to the top of the stack, carrying a heavy 8 x 10 circuit camera to get the picture. He was so proud of it he had it copyrighted. That was the last picture taken from the stack as permission never again was granted. Howard reported that mortar was crumbling and several of the climbing rungs were loosened under his weight. The stack was torn down later. Howard passed away this year at the age of 83. People familiar with Tulsa will recognize some familiar sights in the picture - plus a multitude of changes." |
