Description |
Black & white photograph measuring 3.5" x 3.5" and depicting the south side of Goodwill Industries, formerly Hotel Brady, located at 24 North Main Street in Tulsa, OK. In 1904, Wyatt Tate Brady financed the construction of a three-story, brick hotel, located at 24 North Main Street in Tulsa, Creek Nation. The brick building contained twenty-eight bedrooms, all lighted and heated with natural gas. A wood-frame addition at the rear provided another seven or eight bedrooms. When opened, the hotel offered accommodations at a rate of two dollars a day. In early 1905, building contractors Kelly & Wheatley constructed a brick, thirty-six-room addition. Henry Harrison Brady, the father of Wyatt Tate Brady, managed the hotel for a few years following the completion of the annex. The business continued to attract travelers, and in 1908, the hotel added another eighty-room addition. In 1909, Wyatt Tate Brady hired architect J. P. Curtin and contractor W. A. Pepper to construct an eight-floor addition to the Hotel Brady. The plans called for an additional sixty bedrooms, all fireproof and each with a private bathroom. The addition gave the Hotel Brady a total of 200 guest rooms, making it the third-largest hotel in the State of Oklahoma at the time. A local newspaper announced the project by stating, "Hotel Brady will be [a] new skyscraper." A portion of the rooftop served as a tea garden. A large pass-through joined the newest portion to the earlier hotel buildings. The business operated under the name Hotel Brady from 1904 to 1931. In 1932, Thomas Wilson became manager and ran the business under the name "New Brady Hotel." It continued under that name until January 1935. On the night of January 22, 1935, a fire destroyed the original three-story portion of the hotel and annex, leaving only the newest, eight-story portion. The surviving hotel building sat vacant from 1935 to 1943. Beginning in 1944, Goodwill Industries utilized the building, and continued to do so until 1973. From 1974 to 1978, the building sat vacant. In 1978, the remaining portion of hotel building was demolished. |
