Description |
Sepia-toned, panoramic photograph measuring 40" x 8" of an area of the Greenwood District following the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. Photographer Gifford I. Talmage captured this image in November by taking four separate photographs and piecing them together with fabric to create this panoramic view. The photograph depicts an entire block of North Detroit Avenue destroyed by fire and the reconstruction of a few homes. The foreground of the photograph shows the 500 block of at least ten destroyed homes. One house in the middle of the photograph has enough of the front gable standing to identify the house number. It is house 529 owned by H. M. Magill. The house next door has bags of sand or concrete stacked on the front porch. The photograph also shows the burned home of Ellis W. and Mary Woods located at 531 North Detroit Avenue. See photograph 2002.554.004 for an image of the home before it burned. Other burned homes in this panoramic photograph include the residences of M. Alice Wright, R. T. Bridgewater, A. J. Smitherman, J. J. McKeever, P. S. Thompson, Mary A. Dingey, A. C. Jackson, T. R. Gentry, and C. D. Brown. In the middle of the photograph's background, Booker T. Washington High School is visible at 502 North Frankfort Avenue. Many tents are also visible in the photograph. The American Red Cross made the tents available as temporary shelters. The lower margin of this photograph contains a handwritten caption stating, "Ruins, Reconstruction Period, Nov. 1921." A similar image of this street immediately after the fires is found in photograph 1994.001.031. |
