Description |
Black & white photograph measuring 8" x 10" depicting the Family Relief Department set up by the American Red Cross following the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. The photograph shows four African Americans being assisted by Caucasian Red Cross workers. The woman in white at the far left is Gretchen Abbott. The man at the far left is Clarence H. Dawson. The woman in the center background (nearest the doorway) is Mary Porter Scott. The woman second from the right is Mrs. McCartney. Three men, two Caucasian and one African American, stand at the door. The man on the far left in the doorway is Red Cross Relief Director Maurice Willows. The back wall contains a copy of a railroad map of Oklahoma published in 1920 by the Oklahoma Corporation Commission. Next to the map a blackboard is visible with the inscription "Mr. Willows office." The back of the photograph contains the photographer's stamp indicating G. I. Talmage took this photograph. Photographer Gifford I. Talmage's studio was located in the Robinson Building at 519 West Fourth Street. |
