Black & white photograph measuring 5.75" x 3.5" and depicting "Gilliam #1," an oil well operated by H. F. Wilcox Oil & Gas Company of Tulsa, OK. A typed note on the reverse reads, "Side view of Gilliam No.1, giving close-up view of rig front during operation cycle." Oilman Homer F. Wilcox formed the company in 1918. The company's discovery well in the Beggs Pool came in during the fall of 1918. Wilcox Oil & Gas became one of the most successful independent oil operators in the Mid-Continent Oilfield. The company's first offices were located on the third and 8th floors of the Wright Building, located at 115 West 3rd Street. On May 26, 1920, excavation work began for the construction of the company's own building at 300 West 6th Street. The four-story building cost approximately $160,000. The company occupied the new office building in January 1921. The second floor contained the office of President Homer F. Wilcox, as well as the board room. The third floor contained the accounting department. The successor of the company, Tenneco Oil Company, later occupied the building which was renumbered as 310 West 6th Street. |
