Black & white photograph measuring 4.25" x 2.5" and depicting Cherokee artist Jess Willard Stone (left) handing a carved plaque featuring the likeness of Will Rogers to comedian and actor Bob Hope. Jess Willard Stone (1916-1985) was born in Oktaha, OK, to parents George Maloy Stone (1883-1917) and Lyda Blanche Hendrick Stone (1885-1949). He studied with artists Acee Blue Eagle and Woodrow Crumbo, and later worked for Thomas Gilcrease to produce a series of wooden sculptures. Stone also worked in Tulsa as an ornamental pattern maker for Ernest Wieman Iron Works and as a die finisher for Douglas Aircraft Company. Stone eventually moved to Locust Grove, OK, where he established an art studio. He became known for carvings of stylized human and animal figures. His works received numerous awards. In 1970, Stone was inducted into the Oklahoma Hall of Fame in 1970. |
